GX Initiatives

TOKAI Group GX Initiatives

The TOKAI Group has set "Strengthening the foundation for sustainable growth" as one of the key strategies in its "New Medium-Term Management Plan 2025," and is working as a unified group to reduce and decarbonize. As part of its GX (Green Transformation) strategy, the Group is promoting the two pillars of "Promoting GX in our own business activities" and "Promoting GX in customers' energy usage."

(1) Promoting GX in our own business activities

①Installation of solar power generation systems at our facilities

We are actively working to install solar power generation systems at facilities owned by our group (offices, factories, etc.), and have installed systems at 38 facilities to date.
A 100kW solar power generation system was installed at the TOKAI Aqua Yaizu Plant (Yaizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture) in October 2022. The plant bottles Mt. Fuji natural water "Asagiri no Shizuku" and other products provided by our group, and approximately 20% of its electricity is generated by renewable energy.
TOKAI GAS Fujieda Headquarters (Fujieda City, Shizuoka Prefecture) installed a 31.57kW solar power generation system using the on-site PPA* method in March 2024. Group company TOKAI owns the solar power generation system and sells the electricity generated there to Tokai Gas.
*PPA…Power Purchase Agreement

②Utilizing the environmental value of company-owned solar power generation

Our group owns six large-scale solar power plants (mega solar) in and around Shizuoka Prefecture (total output 10.3MW). From fiscal year 2024, we will procure "non-fossil certificates with tracking” from our company-owned mega solar plants and have begun an initiative to make the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of electricity used in our head office building and other facilities virtually zero.

③Energy conservation through the promotion of optical fiber in CATV business

In our CATV business, we are working to improve customer service by migrating trunk lines from coaxial cables to optical cables. This optical fiber change eliminates the need for equipment required to amplify electrical signals, thereby reducing electricity consumption and GHG emissions.

(2)Promoting GX in customers' energy usage

①Promoting sales of energy-saving gas appliances

TOKAI東海ガス

We propose to our customers the latest gas appliances with excellent energy-saving performance, such as Eco-Jozu, Hybrid water heater, and ENE-FARM. These energy-saving gas appliances contribute to reducing our customers' utility bills and environmental impact by significantly improving energy consumption efficiency.

②Carbon offset gas sales

TOKAI東海ガス

By offsetting the CO2 emitted from the LPG and city gas used by our customers with credits created through a reliable program, it is possible to essentially consider GHG emissions to be zero.
In fiscal 2021, our group has strated to supply LP gas and city gas with carbon credit to local governments and corporations. In addition, starting in October 2024, we will launch a new rate menu for residential detached houses in our city gas business, "New G Life," and sell gas with carbon credit to environmentally conscious customers.

③ Promoting solar power generation systems through PPA

TOKAI

Starting in October 2021, we have been providing the "TOKAI ZERO SOLAR" solar power generation system service, which utilizes the PPA model and has zero initial costs. This service is kind to both the environment and our customers' wallets and has been well received by many customers.

④The advanced energy self-sufficiency system "GQ House"

TOKAI

We are developing the "GQ House *" a near-future residential lifestyle that uses rainwater and solar power to achieve complete selfsufficiency in water and electricity, allowing people to continue living as usual even in the event of a water outage or power outage due to a disaster, etc. This not only contributes to decarbonization, but also strengthens resilience in the event of a disaster.
*”GQ” is named after the kanji character for “自給” as "self-sufficiency" and initial of “Gain Quality”

⑤Participation in the Ministry of the Environment's SHIFT Project

TOKAI

The Ministry of the Environment is implementing the "SHIFT Project" to promote pioneering decarbonization efforts in factories and business establishments. This project provides subsidies for the development of plans to reduce GHG emissions and for updating energy-saving equipment, and TOKAI has been registered as an organization to support the development of reduction plans for this project in fiscal 2024. By supporting low-carbon and decarbonized factories and businesses, we contribute to reduce GHG emissions across society.

⑥Promoting low-carbon society in cooperation with the local community

TOKAIホールディングスTOKAI東海ガス

TOKAI GAS signed a "Collaboration Agreement Toward the Realization of Zero Carbon Cities" with Fujieda City, Shizuoka Prefecture in August 2021 and with Shimonita Town, Gunma Prefecture in July 2022, and is working to decarbonize public facilities in both cities and towns and promote local production and consumption of energy.
TOKAI GAS is also participating in the "Fujieda-Type Forest Carbon Credit" initiative promoted by Fujieda City, contributing to the realization of carbon credits, local production and consumption of energy, and timber in the city.

Additionally, we are working with local governments and educational institutions in Shizuoka Prefecture to foster local decarbonization talent by providing support such as dispatching lecturers for low- and decarbonization education and offering tour facilities.
In response to a request from Shizuoka Prefectural Shimada Commercial High School, TOKAI dispatched employees as lecturers from April 2024 and conducted a total of six comprehensive practical lectures including topics on renewable energy and sustainability.
We will continue to actively provide practical education for young people who will lead the future as working adults and environmental education, etc., in order to contribute to society, the local community, and the global environment.

At the request of Shizuoka University, a national university corporation, TOKAI Holdings is participating as a supporting company in the "Aoharu! Ecology Lab" educational program, in which high school and university students learn about and put into practice decarbonization.
In addition to participating in conferences and providing advice to students, we are also cooperating with the local effort to develop lowcarbon human resources by offering GQ House as a fieldwork location.

⑦"SFM for Office", an AI for office air conditioning

TOKAIコミュニケーションズ

TOKAI Communications offers the "SFM (Smart Facility Manager) for Office" service, which uses AI to control air conditioning in offices.
The system involves installing temperature sensors on office floors, using cloud-based AI to learn from the data and automatically operate each air conditioner. The system will help to reduce electricity consumption in our customers' offices and the associated GHG emissions.

⑧Shared bicycle PULCLE Renewable energy station

TOKAIケーブルネットワーク

TOKAI Cable Network has been operating a shared bicycle service called "PULCLE" in Shizuoka City since June 2020.
In today's automobile-driven society, bicycles are positioned as an effective measure to reduce GHG emissions.
In December 2023, we installed a renewable energy station equipped with a 3.7kW solar power generation system and storage batteries at the north exit of Shizuoka Station. In addition to charging shared bicycles, the stations can also be used as disaster prevention stations in the event of a disaster, contributing to low-carbonization and improved resilience in the region.

⑨Promoting GX through investment in renewable energy-related businesses

TOKAITOKAIベンチャーキャピタル&インキュベーション

Our Group is also focusing on promoting GX through investments in renewable energy-related businesses.

In July 2023, TOKAI invested in REPOWER ENERGY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (REDC), a hydroelectric power generation company in the Philippines, making it an equity-method affiliate (additional investment in February 2024).
Through its participation in REDC, we will work to ensure a stable supply of electricity in the Philippines and promote the spread of renewable energy in ASEAN countries.

In December 2023, TOKAI Venture Capital & Incubation (TVC&I) invested in Albatross Technology Inc., a startup company working on developing floating offshore wind turbines (vertical axis type) in Japan.
Floating offshore wind power generation is attracting attention as the next generation of renewable energy, and progress in its technological development is expected.
We are also working to accumulate knowledge so that we can utilize this technology in the future.

The TOKAI Group will work together with local communities, customers, and suppliers to contribute to reduce GHG emissions and aim to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
